One final newsletter from me as I conclude my work as your Northern District IAHPERD president... First off, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you found time to rest, recharge and connect with family and friends over the holiday break.
Looking back, 2018 has been a productive year for us as a leadership team and an enjoyable experience for me personally. I'm honored to serve the profession and my fellow colleagues in this capacity. As we get set for a changing of the guard, I know that we'll be in good hands as new people have stepped up to fill roles within the organization. I'm looking forward to working with our new president, Steve Hart and our new president-elect, Kelly Zerby. I'm also eager to get to know our new delegate, Angelic Semenek better this year. We'll have Susie Shanel with us again as our treasurer and several others supporting our efforts to continue pushing our profession forward. Thank you to Jason Cowan and Julene Ensign for their work over the years as part of our leadership team as well.
One of the highlights for me this year was beginning a series of mini-workshops around the Northern District area we call "Road Shows." These professional development opportunities are something we look forward to growing in the coming year. We kicked off our first one this past fall at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Our next one will be on April 27 at Rockton Honenegah HS. We'll be pushing out more information on this in the coming months.
I'm also excited to announce that we will be bringing in a special guest presenter, Matt Pomeroy, to our annual Spring Workshop at Judson University in Elgin on February 23rd. I got to spend some time with Matt this summer on a road trip to Kentucky where we both presented at a PE workshop together. Matt teaches middle school physical education in Merton, Wisconsin. You can learn more about him here www.pomeroyshpe.com/
One of the other things we do in addition to supplying professional development opportunities is to support our members by awarding grant money. This year we awarded two grants to applicants totaling just over $1,100.00. If you'd like to get some free money to enhance your program, complete an application CLICK HERE. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2019.
That's all for now...I'm signing off as President and prepping to work with our new team as Past-President. I'm looking forward to 2019 with eager anticipation!
Hard to believe we are just about a third of the way through the school year! I trust you’ve all settled into your school year routine and are looking forward to the upcoming holidays like me. We’ve got some great things happening within our profession that I want everyone to know about.
With the new year right around the corner, we are always looking for new members to step up and get involved in the Northern District as part of our Leadership Team. All you need is an interest in serving. We have a great group of people that you can count on to help make your time of service a positive experience. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d be interested or would like more information. Upcoming vacancies: President-Elect & Delegate
FALL ROAD SHOW A SUCCESS!
We had about 30 college students and a dozen teachers get together for 3 hours of learning and fun at Northern Illinois University on October 13th. Professionals earned 3 CEUs. Resources from the sessions can be found HERE. We are looking forward to making this mini-workshop a yearly event!
NEW MENTORING PROGRAM
Our IAHPERD President, Will Navis, is launching a mentorship program as part of his legacy of service during his tenure. In his words, “We are looking for dedicated and passionate Health, PE, Dance and Adapted Teachers to serve as mentors for our future professionals. As of now, we are looking at one professional working closely with one future professional (matching each other during the end of their junior year of college) and mentoring that person through their senior year and at least the first 2 years post-college.
Our purpose is simple, we want to provide those future professionals with someone that they can lean on, go to for advice, learn from, and become a contributing member to our Health, PE, Dance and Adapted community. More details about the program will be released in the future once we have determined how many mentors we have and how many future professionals we have. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please take a few minutes to fill out the application below. We will contact the members who are accepts in early 2019, and we will match you with a future professional prior to Spring Break season. Thank you for all that you do to make our profession and organization so amazing!”
MORE UPCOMING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Looking ahead to 2019, we are planning two more workshops for IAHPERD members which are scheduled for February 23 in Elgin & April 27 in Hononegah. The purpose of these events is to provide our members with quality professional development opportunities around the Northern District area. Hope you can join us!
Welcome Back, Northern District Members!
I hope everyone had a chance to recharge this summer. I enjoyed a lot of time fishing and traveling. I got a chance to present at several conferences including: Iowa AHPERD, the P.A.W.S Institute in Kentucky, and the PE Institute in North Carolina. It was great connecting with other passionate educators. I also went to Oklahoma for my daughter’s graduation from Army basic training at Fort Sill. Summer flew by (as it always does) and now it’s time to get back to business!
GET INVOLVED We are still looking for members to get involved in Northern District as part of our Leadership Team. All you need is an interest in serving. Please email us at email@example.com if you’d be interested or would like more information. Speaking of getting involved, our next ND meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 17th, from 5-6:30 pm at Schmidt’s Towne Tap in Elburn. All Northern District members are welcome to attend.
2018 FALL PD ROAD SHOW I am excited to announce we are launching a series of mini-workshops throughout the Northern District boundaries that we are calling “PD Road Shows” - as we’ll be traveling around bringing high quality Professional Development to a location near you. Our first one is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th from 8-noon at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb for $10.

NOV. 15-16 IAHPERD CONVENTION Don’t miss out on our State Conference this year at Pheasant Run in St. Charles! Take advantage of the early bird pricing (there was an IAHPERD email blast with info recently). There are over 200 sessions to choose from and dozens of vendors to visit. You’ll definitely come away with tons of ideas to implement in your program. We also scheduled an ice cream social for Northern District members from 4-5pm on Thursday, the 15th - so stop on in and meet our leadership team and build your own sundae!
THANK YOU Finally, I want to thank our friend, Jean Williams and her husband, Don for opening up their lake house to host our Northern District summer meeting on August 7th. Jean retired this past year from teaching in D303 and was our ND treasurer for many years. We had a very productive meeting, good food, had some new ND teachers join us and Don even took us out on the pontoon boat for a ride and fishing afterwards! Definitely a fun day and beautiful location. Thanks again, Jean & Don!
We are almost there! Summer is just around the corner and I trust this year has been a productive one for you and your students. I hope everyone gets a chance to recharge and relax this summer. I am looking forward to attending/presenting at a few conferences in Iowa, Kentucky, and North Carolina and connecting with other PE professionals. I’m also planning to be out on the water doing a lot of fishing! Before we kick off our break, here are a few things pertaining to Northern District...
We are currently looking for members to get involved in Northern District as part of our Leadership Team. All you need is an interest in serving. We have a fun bunch of people to work with and we get together typically once every month or two (summers off) to plan our major events such as our Social Event at the IAHPERD Conference in November, coordinating the Spring Workshop at Judson University in February, and reviewing grant proposals in April. We work together and share the workload so you’re never overburdened with a huge time commitment. Right now, we are looking for a President-Elect. If you’re interested in this position or just want to get involved in other ways, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
I also want to announce the winners of our Northern District grant... Rebecca Meyer, from Sleepy Hollow Elementary, was awarded $550 for her proposal on “Incorporating Breakout EDU in PE.” We also had Staci Hale, from Kingston Elementary School, win $592.96 for equipment to get “More Minutes of Movement in PE.” Congratulations to both Rebecca & Staci for their dedication to their students and the great work they do with kids every day. Can’t wait to hear how these funds benefitted your program! To see a full list of past winners, visit our website: https://ndiahperd.weebly.com/grants.html
Finally, we want to thank our friend, Jean Williams (Wasco Elementary in St. Charles) for her many years of volunteer service to Northern District as Treasurer. We wish you all the best and hope you enjoy your retirement! We will miss you!
Thanks to all the college students and professionals who were able to make it out to our Spring Workshop at Judson University in Elgin on February 17th. There was a lot of great content shared by some wonderful presenters and you can find links to the presentation materials on our website HERE. I also want to thank Palos Sports for donating to our raffle prizes and to the ND leadership team who all contributed to our workshop’s success.
Feedback from these types of events is really valuable. It allows us to make changes where necessary and adjust the programming to meet your needs. Telling us what you enjoyed, what you’d like to see more of, things you think we can do better, or any other information you feel would make our Spring Workshop more meaningful to you, please share that with us! If you were able to attend, CLICK HERE to share your thoughts/experience with us.
I also want to bring your attention to our Northern District grants that we award each year to various members within our District. If you can use some funding to enhance your program, be sure to fill out an application HERE and submit it by April 1st! Winners will be announced in late April and funds dispersed shortly after that. There are also a variety of other grant opportunities available on our site as well. Check out our GRANTS page for more information.
Finally, we want to bring more professional development opportunities to YOU! We realize not everyone can attend the Spring Workshop at Judson, so we want to take our show on the road. Here’s what we’re thinking…get 3 CEU hours for a workshop on a Saturday in late April/early May at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. You interested??? If so, let us know by clicking HERE.
Next meeting is Monday, April 9th, from 5-6:30pm at Schmidt’s Towne Tap in Elburn
ALL Northern District Members Welcome!
Hello and Happy New Year! My name is Mike Graham and I am the newly elected President of the Northern District of IAHPERD. I’m writing to you today to introduce myself and let you know about some of the great things we have planned for the upcoming year!
I currently teach #PhysEd in Geneva at Williamsburg Elementary School. I also serve on the IAHPERD social media committee and just completed my “president-elect” term for Northern District. I am a member of the Advisory Board for Gopher Sports and write monthly blog posts and host occasional webinars. I enjoy speaking and presenting at workshops/conferences and I look forward to making an impact on our profession in the upcoming year.
As president, I want to find out how we (as the ND Leadership Team) can best serve the 800+ members who teach within the Northern District boundaries. What can WE do to help each of you reach your professional goals this year? Professional development opportunities? Access to resources? Grant money? We exist to serve YOU and part of my role as president is to help guide our efforts in such a way that they meet your needs...period.
That being said, I’d like to point you toward our newly updated website: www.ndiahperd.weebly.com where you can find out more about the Northern District and our vision to provide quality professional development experiences along with grant opportunities to support your teaching. Be sure to check out our Spring Workshop at Judson University on February 17th - $15 if you pre-register by January 24! We have a great lineup of presenters sharing both activity and technology sessions which you won’t want to miss!
PD ROADSHOW - Finally, we want to bring more professional development opportunities to YOU! We realize not everyone can attend the spring workshop at Judson, so we’d like to get your feedback on other locations within our Northern District boundaries that we could take our “show on the road”. Take two minutes to fill out this quick 4-question Google form and you can help shape the direction we take as we continue to look for ways to best serve our members!
I hope your 2018 gets off to a great start and I look forward to serving as your president this year.
